Orijen Tundra Freeze-Dried Dog Food

Chewy.com sent me a new food to try out! This time, it was Orijen Tundra Freeze-Dried Dog Food!

DSC_3809

I was really excited when I heard about this food.  I've always loved Orijen as a brand and this food is supposed to be as healthy as feeding your dog a raw diet!  How cool is that!  All the health benefits, but a lot less work/mess.  I was beyond intrigued...

Sounds awesome, right??  And I thought the ingredients in the Tundra variety (there is also Adult Dog and Regional varieties) sounded so exotic and different for a dog food! Venison? Steelhead Trout? Elk?  Sounds delish ;)  Gibson (and Hadley) loved the freeze dried bison treats that I reviewed a few months ago, so I knew he'd like this food.

So I figured the food would be similar to the treats.. just some little kibble shaped freeze dried food.   So imagine my surprise when I opened the bag to find this:

I was all like, "whaaaa?"  I grabbed the bag and searched for some directions on these things.  So apparently you put the medallion in a bowl..

And then some warm (not hot) water to it to rehydrate the food so your dog can enjoy it's flavor to the fullest.  You stir for 3-5 minutes and then it looks like this:

I probably could have stirred it for a bit longer, but I was lazy and Gibson was dying of hunger ;)  So, I gave it to him..

And it was gone in 2 seconds ;)

He loves it and I think it's a great food if you have the money and are patient!  The 6oz bag that I received sells for $14.99 and contained about 12 medallions.  It says a dog that is 24lbs (Gibson is 28ish) needs 5 3/4 'medallions' a day.  So, that's about $7 a day to feed your dog.  I'm sure the price goes down the larger the bag that you buy though.  I am not sure how it compares with feeding actual raw meat to your dog either.. Could be a bargain!

Also, I'm not sure I'd want to spend 3-5 minutes 'preparing' Gibson's food.  He can barely handle it when I stop to add his enzyme powder!  Although, again, I'm sure that seems like a piece of cake compared to preparing raw meat for your dog on a daily basis.

So, overall, I think this is a really great dog food option. Especially for those who feed or are interested in feeding a raw diet!
