Halloween Giveaway! Spring Naturals Treats and Lickety Stik

Happy Halloween!  I don't always dress Gibson up, but thought I'd come up with an easy costume for him this year.. a tourist!  Just needed a few leis and one of Hadley's floppy hats ;)DSC_4675
He loved it ;)

Miss Hadley herself is going as a cupcake this year!  She loves cupcakes and when I showed her a few costumes to choose from she picked his one out :)

Oh and guess what? Today is her birthday!! My little girl is 2!!!!

Ok, on to the giveaway!  I was sent some new treats to try out from Spring Naturals and Lickety Stik!

First up, Spring Naturals. These are naturally fortified baked treats in Turkey & Salmon flavor w/a medley of fruits and berries.  YUM. These are made with natural ingredients w/none of the bad stuff.

They're a really nice size too!  Bigger than I expected when I opened the bag.  Gibson, of course, loves them!

Next up, Lickety Stik.  This is so cool!  It's a little tube of liquid treats with a roller ball on top for your dog to lick!  And there is only 1 calorie for every 10 licks!! Not bad.

I thought this would be great to leave on the coffee table for whenever we new Gibson would be especially barky (like a  world series game.... haha) and it worked pretty well as a distraction!

Look at those gooooogly eyes!

Alright, so would you like to win these treats??  Enter the giveaway below!  Winner will be chosen Halloween night!

Nutro Crunchy Treats - with Real Carrots!

It's a new month (halfway through it now, but still), which means it's time for my monthly treat review from!  This month, they sent me Nutro Crunchy Treats!

Before we get to that though.. look how awesome is.. I got a surprise package in the mail yesterday from them and it was a painting of Gibson!  I couldn't believe it!!  What an awesome company!! Thanks to whoever thought to send it and whoever painted it!

Ok, back to the review.. I was excited to try these treats.  The size reminded me of Gibson's Charley bear treats, which are great for training and small rewards.  And since they are made by Nutro, the ingredients are super healthy and high quality.

They come in 6 flavors (peanut butter, apple, mixed berries, banana, carrot and pomegranate).  I chose carrot since Gibson loves eating carrots!  I love how short the ingredient list is: Whole Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Dried Carrots, Chicken Meal, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Molasses, Natural Carrot Cake Flavor, Cinnamon, Preserved With Mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary Extract.

Gibson was very excited to try them (shocking)

Hadley wanted to feed them to him.  Or perhaps just try them for herself..

I must admit, after she put one in her mouth, I did the same.. and while they still tasted like a dog treat.. the smelled amazing!!  There is cinnamon in these and it smells like carrot cake!  Yummm!

Obligatory product shot w/Gibby in background

Another great treat to try! We love um! also wants to invite you to enter their monthly giveaway!  Enter below to win a $50 giftcard to their site!

Getting along?

We had our first family photo shoot a few Sundays ago.  Poor Gibson was not apart of it (how dare we?! I know..), but as soon as we got back home Hadley wanted to take him for a walk.. and she wanted to walk him herself!  And he cooperated!

He almost looks like he doesn't mind that she has the reigns!  Is that a smile I see??

Oh and then this magic happened...

Can you get any cuter? My cute dog, my cute kid and a beautiful fall tree!   Love, love, love :)

Anyway, they may be getting a long a little better.. slowly but surely.  Hadley also started daycare this week!  Just a few hours a week, to give me some time to get some work done and let her get used to being without me.  She did great, I did great, but Gibson seemed genuinely upset when I returned home w/o her for the first time! He just looked at me like, uh.. I think you forgot something!!  It was cute.  He does care ;)

The end.

Is Natural Enough?

I've talked about this a lot, but dog nutrition is a big deal here in the household of Gibson.  Well, pet nutrition.. it all started with our pet hedgehog, Maeby, who was our first pet.  I wanted to give her the best food that was balanced for her needs. I ended up selecting 4 different brands of food to mix together to give her the perfect meal!  And then Gibson came along, so I already was a seasoned food researcher.. It took me 4 tries, but I finally found his food after tons of internet searching and trials to see what works with his body.  Anyways, moral of the story.. Pet nutrition is super important! And selecting a food that has natural ingredients and balanced nutrients is vital to the health of your dog or cat (or hedgehog ;) )

To elaborate on that point..  Ingredients are chicken, vegetables, fruits, etc. Nutrients are what your pet’s body absorbs from those ingredients. And as ingredient quality increases, so does a pet's ability to absorb and use the nutrients from those ingredients. No single ingredient makes a food better or worse. Too much of one nutrient (like protein) or too little of another (like phosphorus) can be harmful to a pet’s health. A pet food is a sum of its parts.

So, the goal is to make a pet food with quality ingredients that deliver nutrients like protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals balanced in the right proportions to provide optimal nutrition for your pet.

The interesting thing about this whole topic is the idea that feeding your pet what they would eat in the wild is better for them. Dogs and cats need protein in their diet to meet their requirements for essential amino acids. The amino acid requirement for cats is higher than for dogs. However, once those requirements are met, additional protein beyond what the pet can use for energy is excreted.
A dog’s or cat’s energy requirements can also be equally met by carbohydrates. Using carbohydrates rather than protein to meet energy requirements has the benefit of controlling the level of minerals or other nutrients to avoid excessive levels that are not optimal for a pet’s health.

Therefore, a diet with a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins and minerals from a variety of sources is ideal. Comparing the food of dogs and cats in the wild to that fed to our pets misses the main point that optimum food in the wild is that which allows maximum reproduction as fast as possible.
So, the question is: Are there any natural dog or cat foods out there that have the ingredients you want PLUS the nutrients in the right balance?

The Hill's Pet Nutritionist even has a corgi seal of approval!

Well, there may be others, but the new Hill’s® Ideal Balance® line of pet foods has caught my attention. In these foods, what you will find are natural ingredients that you want to feed your pet with 100% balanced nutrition. What makes me feel good about recommending this food is that Ideal Balance is a true natural pet food crafted by pet nutritionists who know how to perfectly balance natural ingredients for better health for your dog and cat. See for yourself in this video featuring Hill’s Pet Nutritionist Kathy Gross, who chooses to feed Hill’s Ideal Balance to her own pets:
