Blogiversary questions for you!!

Thank you everyone for all of your questions you asked me!  I had a lot of fun answering them! In case you missed any of them, here they are:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

So, now I have some questions for you!

1. What's your favorite things about Corgi Butts (the blog...but you can say what you like about the fluffy bums too I suppose ;) )?

2. Anything you'd like to see more of?

3. Anything you'd like to see less of?

4. Is there anything I could do to make the blog better/more enjoyable?

5. What would you think of a corgi blogger secret santa exchange.... Would you be interested in participating?  :)

Ok, that's it!  Answer away!

And for fun... Here's my very first post from 2 years ago (yesterday!):

Hey everyone! I'm Kelly and the little guy at the top of your page is Gibson.  This blog was created to tell our tales of how life has changed since we met each other.

I've been wanting a Corgi puppy for as long as I can remember..falling in love with the breed while watching the Westminster Dog Show as a kid.  My husband and I recently bought our first home, which  gave us the opportunity to finally own a puppy.  I, being a freakish research queen, started researching breeders as soon as we  closed on our house..and exactly one month later we brought Gibson home.  Probably a little too soon, but I would not regret it for the world.

My next post will  tell about the first 2 months of living w/Gibson (he will be 4 months on Saturday!) to catch you all up, and then I will start posting here regularly w/all things corgi.

Hope you enjoy it!

Blogiversary questions answered! Part 4

You seem to walk a fine line between a personal blog and an on-the-side business for some of your design work. So which came first? Did you start a dog blog to talk about Gibson and then it evolved into a shop or did you set out to start a shop and then used Gibson as your subject?
Well, I first started a 'blog' about Gibson on mycorgi.com, which you can see here.  I started that as a diary about raising Gibson so that I can look back and read about it years later.  At the time I was  writing those entries, I was also reading corgi blogs and it made me want to have my own blog so that I could interact with those bloggers... so I took the leap and created a blogger account.  And yes, in the back of my mind I thought, "hey! I can start a shop to go along with the blog!"  I have a total entrepreneur mentality, you see (I used to be completely self-employed).  Even picking out the title of my blog, I wanted one that would be somewhat marketable.   So, the answer is..  yes, I started the blog first and it quickly evolved into a shop :)

Have you considered getting another corgi to keep gibson company?
The big question!  haha.   Impractical me would love to throw caution to the wind and scoop up the first corgi puppy that I see.. Every year, Gibson's breeder sends me photos of his new siblings and I've fallen in love.

First with this girl:

And then this little tri-color twin:

...but my husband has made me practical ;)  It just doesn't make sense for us to have 2 dogs!  For one, while Gibson loves to play with other dogs, he does not like to share and he is so relieved when he can go home and sleep and have me all to himself.  Also, both of our dog sitters said they couldn't handle watching two dogs at once.  And lastly, we are at the point where we hope to 'expand our family' in the next few years, and having an extra dog on top of that would just make things extra crazy plus it'd' be an added cost that we didn't need to have...    We are perfectly happy having only our Gibby poo as a pet! :)

If Gibson were to have a fur sibling what would his/her name be?
I love the name Roxy for a girl and Ozzie for a boy.  But it's not happening! lol

How has your life changed since bringing Gibson home?
I've learned much more about responsibility and I am rarely ever bored! I can always go for a walk or play with him if there is nothing to do. He is my best bud! :)  I'd say the worst thing is not having as much freedom.  It'd be nice to be able to go out of town without worrying about who is going to watch Gibson... but that has gotten easier as he's grown older :)

What is Gibson's biggest fear?
Smoke detector beeping/chirping and whistles!

If you picked gibson from a litter why did you choose him?
I picked him because he was the cutest.. not gonna lie!  haha.  He was my first dog and I wanted him to be the perfect red and white corgi with a nice blaze and a big white collar :)

Why did you name Gibson, Gibson?
He was going to be Ein (Cowboy Bebop), but we decided against naming him that and started looking for new names.   My husband found this video while we were preparing to bring Gibson home:

(I love all of these videos, by the way! Here are the puppy training videos And these are videos for training difficult dogs)

After we  saw this video, we were torn between Gibson & Buster (Arrested Development reference..We already had a Maeby (the hedgehog) to go along with it).  We chose Gibson because it had a connection to Ben's favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals (pitcher, Bob Gibson).

Blogiversary questions answered! Part 3

How many whiskers does Gibson have?
It looks like he has about 20 on each side, so 40?    Oh and fun fact:  One side of his face has black whiskers and the other has white! :)
DSC_6439

When is Gibson's birthday?
July 1st, 2008

What's the most amazing or cool trick that Gibson can do?
Our favorite trick is 'high five'.   It makes us chuckle every time.

Blooper Reel!

Are Gibson's allergies over?
Yes! Thankfully :)  They usually last about mid-August to mid-September.

How long is Gibson?
I suck at measuring, but I think he's about...
21 inches long from his nub to his chest.   24 inches long when stretched out.

How tall is Gibson at the shoulder?
12 inches high

is "Corgi Butts" your first blog? If you had a non-dog blog, what would it be about?
No :)  5 years ago, I ran this blog: iheartvintagetees.blogspot.com  to go along with my t-shirt shop, KA Designs.  It fizzled out and then I started this one a while later :)

I have actually started 2 other blogs, but then I've chickened out and deleted them.   One was about my home and it's renovation and the other was about cooking and healthy living.   I decided I would not be able to keep up with them and still put enough time into "Corgi Butts".. so I deleted them :)

Blogiversary questions answered! Part 2

What treats do you give Gibson?
Dog teats:   Charley Bears, Fruitables & Pumpkin Crunchers!
People treats: Bananas, peanut butter, blueberries, carrots, cheese, pumpkin, yogurt

Have you changed Gibson's dog food? If so, what is it?
I've changed Gibson's food 5 times, but he's been on Wellness Core  for a year now!  Here are details on that switch.  Before that it was Puppy Chow (breeders) -> Science Diet (vet) -> Canidae ALS (no likey) -> Wellness Just for Puppy -> Wellness Super5Mix -> Wellness Core

New "Slow Down" Bowls
More, please!

Has Gibson ever snapped, growled, or bit you or someone?
DSC_8181
Yes.  Gibson is a moody little bugger, not going to lie.  When he was a puppy, we had to work hard to get him to not bite people.   He grew out of it for the most part when he was 5-6 months old or so, but he still gets very grouchy around other dogs when he is not in the mood to play.  He'll snarl and show his teeth if another dog will not back down.  Also, if there is something extremely tasty that he shouldn't have, he get very protective of it.  I have to hold him down and pry open his jaws to take it away from him and sometimes he'll snap at me.   As soon as it's gone though he's back to normal.  So, I don't know.  He's not perfect.. ;)

What's Gibson's favorite toy?
This bad boy:

The Good Other Cuz Rubber Dog Toy

Why? It's obnoxious!  It's the loudest longest lasting squeaky toy ever.  Plus, it bounces and is great for fetch in the house.  And it' obnoxious...

Has Gibson ever been a therapy dog?
No, but he does brighten a lot of people's days.  He loves everyone and loves to say hi to strangers and give them kisses  :)

Blogiversary questions answered! Part 1

Why did you choose a corgi to consider for a pet?
I've always loved dogs and growing up, my mom and I would watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show every year on tv.  I'd always choose a favorite to root for and one year a corgi caught my eye.  I've been in love ever since.  When it was time for my husband and I to get our own dog, I researched corgis like crazy to make sure they were a right fit for us, and they were!! :)

If Gibson could only eat one thing for the rest of his life, what would he choose?
Probably a cheese and peanut butter sandwich.  Using bacon as the bread ;)

What's your best training advice for other Corgi owners?
Be consistent, socialize, socialize, socialize, and don't give up!   When you are first starting out, I'd definitely suggest taking a basic obedience class, not only for your corgi, but for you as well!  Once you learn basic training techniques, take them home and use them consistently!  They will become second nature to both you and your dog.  Classes are great for socialization as well.  It is so important for your dog to get used to behaving nicely around other people and dogs.  If not, they can become incredibly shy or worse, super mean towards others.   Let them sniff other dogs that you walk by, take them to the dog park, make friends with neighbors, etc.  And of course, don't give up!  Keep at your training and it will pay off! :)

Gibson is your first corgi, but is he your first dog? How have you learned so much about dogs and taking care of them?
Gibson is my first dog that I have owned, but we always had dogs growing up.  Actually, I think there was only a few months period, while living with my parents, that we did not have a dog.  I learned the basics of how to care for dogs from having them around.  After I moved out, I did have another pet on my own before Gibson.   She was a hedgehog named Maeby Pants:

She was the most  moody girl ever and hated everything.  It sounds silly, but she really taught me a lot about responsibility and taking care of something.  I went on hedgehog forums and learned a lot about all of the best products and foods to give her a good life.  Hedgehogs actually eat cat food, so I learned all about how bad corn & by-products were just by feeding Maeby! She ate a combo of Innova, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's soul and hedgehog food :)  Although, she only lived to be 2, so, maybe I didn't take the best care of her :(

I've also learned a ton by researching online.  I am known as 'the research queen' by my husband and family, and once I am interested in something, I don't stop trying to learn everything about it until I am sick of it.. Luckily, I haven't become sick of Gibson  yet ;)  I think learning by real life experiences is the best way to learn, so that's why I love blogs so much.  The amount of things you can learn about is endless! :)

How do you always find such cool stuff for dogs? What's your philosophy behind pet products, etc. And how do you always find these great items?
Again, research and blogs :)  I see something cool, I research it, read reviews and see if anyone else uses it.  I do try to be environmentally responsible as much as possible, so if I see something that will reduce waste or is made of sustainable materials, I  usually am more attracted to it.  I love antlers since they last forever... I love skineez since Gibson cannot destroy them like most stuffies... But, I still buy Kong SqueakAir balls even though they don't last very long because Gibson loves them... I just try balance being practical and giving Gibson things that he will enjoy :)

Travelin' Man

A few weekends ago, Gibson, Ben and I took a long car trip to the southern tip of our state to go to a family reunion.  It was the longest trip we've ever taken together with Gibson AND we also were staying a night in a hotel with him for the first time, so I was a little worried how the pup would handle it all.  I'm happy to say that he handled it like a champ.  For the most part...

Before the trip, I had purchased Gibson a new little travel bag for our driving adventures (when your families don't live close, you have to take lots of weekend trips.).  I used to just use a big tote bag, but then I about died when I saw this cool bag...

DSC_1249

The Pet Trek On-the-Go Storage Pack!  Loves it!    (Full disclosure: I photoshopped Gibson's photo into the little window as I've been too lazy to print one out of him and put it in there.. hehe)   It is a little backpack, which came in handy while leaving the hotel while holding a dog leash in one hand and luggage in the other.  The pack opens up with 4 compartments inside for you to store and organize your dog's food, dishes, toys and more!  On the outside are two mesh pockets, which is where I keep his leashes (for easy grabbing!). Buy Now!

DSC_1244

It also comes with a fun bone toy on top.  I didn't have high hopes for this toy.. I figured Gibson would either destroy it in 5 minutes or want nothing to do with it.. but he went nuts for it!  It doesn't squeak, but it does poof out air when you squeeze it. For some reason, that little puff of air makes Gibson run around  like a crazy person.  Nice when I want him to get all of his energy out :)

DSC_1154
I dunnos, I loves my squishy bone toy, ma!

After we were all packed up, we hit the road for a lovely 5+ hr drive south.  We stopped halfway for Ben and I to switch off driving and to let Gibson pee.  Gibson was so excited to get out of the car he could hardly contain himself. I hated to tell him we were only halfway...

By the way, he's been sooo good in the car since I put his crate in the back seat.  He just lays in there and doesn't make a peep the whole way! Bliss!

Another 2+ hours later, we were finally to the town that we were headed to.  The first stop was at a taco joint that is one of Ben's faves.  Of course, Gibson wanted to order some too...
DSC_1208
I can has sancho?

The reunion was fun.  It was on the family farm, so Gibson got to run around "like a real live dog" and also play with his cousin Orson, who was also there, all day long.  He behaved wonderfully, but kind of ticked me off when he found some ham scraps that had been tossed in the garden and kept finding them and eating them.  All.  Day.  Long.  More on that later...

When it was time to go, we headed out to our next destination: The hotel!  I was quite excited to see how Gibson would react to sleeping in a hotel.  He was super duper excited.  He wanted to say hi to everyone and was woofing a bunch while we were in the lobby, but overall, he did great :)

DSC_1214
On our way up the elevator!

Up in our room, I showed Gibson his bed and he was quite excited as you can see..
DSC_1215

...but he was also super exhausted.  By about 9pm we both went to bed....  but woke up at 3am!  Remember those ham scraps??  Well eating those caused him quite the tummy issues!  (I hope you don't mind poop talk) At 3, I took him outside and he took the biggest poop I've ever seen, and then another about 5 feet away. I couldn't believe it, but I cleaned it up and we headed back up to go to sleep.   At 6 I woke up again and Gibson was hanging off of the bed, so I took him out and he pooped again.  Big.  I figured he had to be done, but at 7:30 he  pooped again.. and then once again before we left at 8 for good measure ;)    So 5 poops in 5 hours!  Solid.  Could not believe it.

DSC_1218

DSC_1219
Can we gos?  I gots ta poo, ma!

We headed back that morning (bright and early) and relaxed the rest of the day.  Gibson woke me up at 3 am the next few days to go potty (grr) and had some issues pooping, but I'm happy to say that it cleared up in a few days :)

And that's my story of traveling and poop lol.

23.3

That's how many lbs Gibson weighs.  23.3.  4 lbs down from last year. 23.3!!

DSC_1147
Who, me??

So, we went to the vet today for Gibson's annual Wellness exam, and he aced it ;)   The vet said he looked super healthy and was the perfect weight for his small frame.  I am so happy!  No more fatty puppy!  We totally rocked Operation Slim Down Gibson!  And as a bonus, I got to buy the cheaper Heartgard for dog's under 25lbs!  Score!

Just look at this fit little dude ;)

Bed Sleeper

I guess Puggie is not an outside dog anymore.  The other night, we took Gibson outside before going to bed.  He spotted Puggie, grabbed him and 'snuck' him inside.  While I went up to brush my teeth and get ready, Ben carried Gibson, who was still holding Puggie in his mouth, up the stairs.    So now, not only is Puggie an inside dog, he also sleeps on our bed.

DSC_1224

He definitely takes after his big brother, who slyly made his way into our bed 2 years ago and hasn't looked back ;)

Puggie

We adopted a puppy today.  His name is Puggie.

We found him on the side of the road looking so miserable and alone.   At first, Gibson was very cautious of him, but once introductions were out of the way, he decided that he loved him and we had to rescue him.  Before I knew it, Gibson was carrying Puggie down the street with us.

I've never seen him so determined to get something home before.  No stopping to sniff or eat bark or pee.  Nope, we were taking this puppy home to a safe place before anyone could stop us.

Once we got home, Gibson, still carrying the pup, looked at me as if to ask if we had done the right thing.  Maybe it was some little girls puppy and she will be looking for him...  Maybe Puggie  won't like us... But after carful consideration, we decided  that this is where Puggie belongs (no dog deserves to be left alone overnight on a parkway).  Gibson eyes lit up with this decision and then his big brotherly instincts kicked in.  He needed to find a nice spot for his new friend, so he gently set him down on our patio, sniffed him over really good, gave him kisses and then left him there and went inside with me.

DSC_1188

Apparently Puggie is an outside dog.

No worries though.   Gibson has promised to walk him and feed him every day.

Brush 'Em, Brush 'Em, Brush 'Em

Gibson has bad breath.   The worst.   There is a reason why we call him Stinky (Stinks, Stinker, Stinky McStinkerson, etc.).  Part of the problem is that he eats every piece of cat, rabbit and squirrel poop that he can find.  The rest is genetics and how often I brush his teeth...

I try to brush his teeth at least once a week.  Sometimes more, sometimes less, but I know how important oral hygiene is.. even for doggies... so I make sure  to do it.  Yes, it can be a tough task for you.  No, it is not a dog's favorite thing in the world.  But you can do it :)

Gibson actually does not mind teeth brushing time because he LOVES his toothpaste.   I buy him Cain & Able KissAble Toothpaste and matching toothbrush.   It is awesome.  It smells like vanilla frosting and Gibson goes gaga for it!

DSC_1058

I just squeeze some out onto his doggy toothbrush...

DSC_1057

... and let Gibson go to town on it!

DSC_1096

I hold the brush backwards at first so that he can't lick all the toothpaste off and is forced to chomp on the brush in his mouth...

DSC_1115

... Nom, nom nom... brushing my teeth without realizing it.... Nom nom nom...

DSC_1099

Once the brush is back on his molars, I take action.  I grab his bottom jaw (sorry couldn't take a photo w/no hands), pry his mouth open and scrub away.   I usually do one side at a time (to give him a break) and then repeat, making sure to get the back teeth really well.

Once I am done, I let him go back to licking and chomping away at the brush (making sure he doesn't chomp too hard.  I've had to replace many brushes after he split them in half.. lol... so now he only gets to chomp them lightly).

And that's it!  All done and only took a few painless minutes :)

Well, it used to be it... but now I've added a new weapon to my arsenal...  SpaDog Clean Breath Drops!

DSC_1128

Love it!  Even after I brush Gibson's teeth, he has gnarly breath, so I was looking for something to freshen it up and I found this stuff.   It works great, but Gibson HATES it.  He gets the most disgusted look on his face when I drop a few drops on his tongue.  Not sure why..

It is made from all natural ingredients like, peppermint, lemon, caraway and ginger which is supposed to aid in digestion and prevent bad breath in the first place.  I've tried it myself and it works for me too lol :)  Of course it doesn't keep the bad breath away forever..  so I give him a few drops whenever I get a really bad dog breath smell in my face ;)

So that's it!  Gibson's oral hygiene routine.

Do you brush your dog's teeth?  What products & techniques do you use??
