Bossy Fetcher

I've posted before that Gibson is not a fetch dog. He just had no interest. At all. He thought it was pretty stupid of me to expect him to bring back whatever it was I had him chase. Well, little did I know that I actually had to TRAIN him to play fetch. Who knew??

Fave Toy

So, I learned that I had to MAKE him come back or else I wouldn't play anymore. And it worked! The little bugger plays fetch now, and likes it! And when he gets really excited,he's a bossy fetcher. He barks barks barks until you throw the toy for him. It's quite annoying. Especially around company. Ugh ;)

This is illustrated perfectly in the below video, where he is playing fetch w/his Auntie Coal:

Seriously bossy :)

Smart thinking on your part! Now he knows the game and the rules too!

That is funny, i have 2 corgi's. My oldest was never taught to fetch but from day 1 he's always done it. It's what he lives for, my youngest could care less. If he's got fetching down. Try a frizbee, mine love it.

yep, sounds familiar. Bails used to love chase after a toy, but she never used to bring the ball back. Once she understood that the game is over if we don't have a ball or a frisbee to thorw, she will quickly bring it back to us. Now she is OBSESSED. She will bring us random things and wants us to throw them all the time.

It helped tremendously with her "leave it" command. That ball is dropped quicker than we can finish saying the two words...:-)

Hahaaha another way Sadie and Gibson are similar!!! Sadie always barks at me if I don't throw the ball fast enough. So cute. Love the video!

Mom says that Gibson is a cutie. I prefer to lay down and watch Mom and my Shih-Tzu sister, Liah, play fetch. It's more comfortable to just watch.

He may not be getting the ball, but he sure is getting his 10,000 steps in playing!

Chelsea is a bossy fetcher, too! I think it is a Corgi thing!

Sammy was a soccer corgi.....would dribble the ball back to you with his muzzle.....

i am certain he is playing on the other side of rainbow bridge right now!!!!

Oh my gosh! That is too funny! Sammy thinks he is too smart for all that. He just doesn't fetch. He understands the idea, and I know it 'cause he does it with kids and me on occasion. Otherwise, say at the dogpark, he finds other dogs playing fetch with their parents and he joins in. Kinda. He runs with the said dog, half way, and waits. Then on said dog's return, runs back trying to take the ball out of it's mouth. If the dog gives up the ball. He will sniff it and look back at the dog. He just wants a running friend and attention, no fetching! Lol.
Good for Gibson. That's an easy game for us parents! Haha. He looks so cute with his Auntie Coal!

Yeah, we had to train Theo to fetch, now that I think of it, but it was such a gradual process, I don't think we did anything specific. We would mostly just try to encourage him to come back, and when we did that, encouraged him to come back with the toy. Started teaching him what his toys were, that sort of thing.

I love how Coal always brought the ball back, but Gibson always gave that helpful toss at the very end to show his participation. So cute!

Theo is a big time bossy fetcher! He has this hysterical growl that he makes while he tosses the toy more precisely on your feet as if you say "no really, throw this". Guests always think it's funny. Thankfully. Usually if they don't, they're not dog people, and why would I want non-dog people in my house anyway?

Hi Kelly & Gibson. I love your blog and your beautiful pictures! :) We found your blog through some other blogs we read, and Bailey and I are new to the corgi blogging community. :)

Bailey never was a fetch dog either, until we brought him to a field and offered him tiny bits of peanut butter sandwich in return for the ball being brought back. He's been good ever since.... and now is even a bit ball crazy.... however, bailey will not fetch around other dogs, only if hes alone. hahaha

Finn and Lola won't fetch. They reject the whole premise.

Jasper doesn't play fetch. He will run after anything I throw, just wont bring it back.....he just likes the chase :)

Hey Kelly,
What method(s) did you use on Gibson? I have a 2 year old fluffy Corgi named Ender and he never brings anything back!

Thanks!

Hi Akshay! I will post something later this week on how I got Gibson to bring it back :)

Yea a lot of them don't come pre-fetch addicts lol. Charlie had to learn from Roxi and Roxi had to learn herself. They both now will randomly come up during the day and you'll hear a 'THUD' or something hit your foot and the talking at you starts if you ignore it hahah.
