The Great Corgi Clog '09

A little over a week ago, Gibson came home w/fleas. It was awful. We didn't want the fleas jumping off of him and creating little flea cities in our carpet, so we bathed him. And bathed him. And bathed some more. Worked like a charm. Unfortunately for us though, Gibson is shedding. And with the fleas, about 4lbs of hair came off of him in the tub as well.

We knew this was going to be a problem, so Ben made sure to scoop out all the hair he could and pulled out, what he called, a "corgi hair donut" out of the drain. Crisis averted, we thought. Well, a week goes by and the tub is draining slower and slower.... until last weekend when it just stopped draining all together. Great! All of the hair we missed must of suddenly decided to form one impenetrable force that no water could break through.

Taking a page from Young House Love, we tried everything... I mean EVERYTHING, to move this hair clog. Plunging, an auger, vinegar & baking soda, boiling water, drain-o, liquid plumber, liquid plumber gel (we know these are horrible chemicals to add to the environment, but we were desperate people. Desperate!). Sometimes, the water would drain (verrrrrry slowly), and then the next day it would just stop draining at all again. We came *this close* to calling a plumber, when all of a sudden... It UNCLOGGED! We basically threw all of our tricks at the clog at once and it worked!! And it wasn't draining slowly, the water was shooting right down the drain. It was a beautiful sight.

So anyways..

The next time this hairy little bugger needs a bath....

who me???

We are investing in one of these silly things...

A Day at the Park

I took Gibson to the park near our house yesterday, which is something I try to do every weekend to let him run around and explore and work off energy so Ben and I can go out at night and not feel guilty :) It is a great park. There is a small lake and then a river that you can walk along in back. The best part about it is that hardly anyone goes there, and the ones that do, usually stay up by the lake to fish or let their kids use the jungle gym that is there. Which means, as soon as we get past that point the leash is off. It is wonderful :)

He loves to do this... Get really close to the water, hook his back legs on something so he doesn't fall in, and then sniff, sniff, sniff!

He's such a happy guy when he's here.

They just recently (over the summer) added the paved trail and this deck on the river. It's much nicer than it used to be, where we'd just be walking on dirt/mud.

He feels like a real live dog when he's at the p-a-r-k.

Goodbye, Old Friend..

90% of the time when I come home for lunch or after work, Gibson is usually curled up on a chair or couch and looks like he is in trouble. His ears are all the way down and he looks like he's saying, "I'm sorrrry". We assume it's because he used to get in trouble so much when he was younger, that he expects it? Or maybe he's just that tired.. Well, yesterday, he gave me that look, but after a good cuddle session he was his happy cute self. I ate lunch, took him on a quick walk, then went up stairs and found that there was a reason for the 'down ears' today...

My poor shoe was sitting in the middle of the hallway, completely destroyed. And, you know where it was? In my closet where it should be! With the door half closed. So the little bugger went upstairs while we were gone, into our room, decided to rummage through my closet and pick out one of my last black dress shoes that he had yet to destroy...

He's very lucky that he's cute ;)

Ruff Weekend

My poor guy. He had a bit of a rough weekend.

It started out great though.. We went 'home' to my parents for my grandma's 80th birthday on Saturday and Gibson had a blast playing fetch with the chucker in their backyard w/Coal. He ran so much, it was crazy! And he'll actually fetch and bring the ball back when we play here. Yay Gibson! Little did he know though, that the reason we were running him to death was because the actual party was not at my parents house and he'd be left alone for 8 hrs... *dun dun DUN!*

Ben and I got back from the party around midnight to find our little guy crying his eyes out he was so excited. He just wanted us to stay up and make up for all the lost play time while we were gone. We finally took him to bed after an hour, but he would not go to sleep (and I have a feeling he did not sleep while we were gone either). He was just so nervous or worried that he'd miss something. Every little sound he'd woof. So, I let him out of the room, only to hear him scratching on the door to get in a half hour later. I think I got 3 or 4 hours of sleep, and then woke up to find Gibson sitting up and staring at me. I tried going back to sleep, but then he walked over and stood over Ben's head, so I had to be a good wife and wake up and get Gibson off the bed.

So, we did our normal morning routine, stayed until about noon, then headed home (he passed out as soon as we shifted in reverse, poor guy). Unfortunately though, we brought some more visitors home w/us. My parents have a bit of a flea problem around their home, so we had a few (ok, a lot more than a few.. like the most fleas we've seen on him. Ever.) climb on Gibson for the ride. I knew they'd die eventually if they stayed on him since he's on K9 Advantix, but we still did not want any jumping off and laying eggs in our house :(

So, as soon as we got in, I gave him a bath to get as many fleas off of him as possible w/the normal dog shampoo that we had. It was a lonnnng bath and the poor sleepy guy looked so miserable. After he was rinsed, I took him out to dry him off and inspect for fleas and he was still covered :( So, I ran to the store and bought him actual flea shampoo and headed back for round 2. Poor little guy. And this bath was even worse because he had to sit w/the lather on him for 5 minutes. BUT! It did the trick. No more moving black things all over. They were either in the tub or dead in his hair, so SUCCESS!!

After that ordeal, I gave him cheese to cheer him up (poor guy), took him for his walk and fed him dinner and then let him sleep the rest of the night. Unfortunately for him though, the biggest Colts game of the season was on last night... And Ben and I got a little excited.. especially since they came back and miraculously won it in the final minute! Poor Gibson was so scared and confused. He kept growling whenever we'd cheer and then when they won he was running around howling and growling at us. It was like he didn't know who we were, I felt so bad :( We finally got him calmed down by sitting on the floor and talking calmly to him.. Poor guy :(

He seemed to sleep everything off though, and today is a much more normal day so far. OH and his paw is looking better, yay! Hopefully it will be 100% soon :)

Pumpkin Cake Pops

I have a new favorite go-to dessert, and I thought I'd share it with you.

May I introduce to you, the Cake Pop:Pumpkin Cake Pops
No, Gibson, it's not for you...

If you've ever been to the blog, Bakerella, you probably already know all about cake pops. She is kind of the inventor of these delicious little things, and makes them WAY cuter and more creatively than I have the patience for :)

I'm telling you though, these are so incredibly delicious and really, pretty easy to make! Basically, you bake a cake (using a boxed mix, nice!), crumble it up, mix in frosting, rolls balls, dip them in the melted coating, and voila! Delicious little cakes on a stick.

When you bite into it, it has a nice hard "chocolately" candy coating w/ yummy soft cake inside.

Pumpkin Cake Pops
(I bit it, not Gibson)

So, how do you make said pops you ask? Well, the basic instructions are here (just switch out the cake & coating flavors to whatever you'd like): but, add the lollipop stick (which you can buy at most craft stores) before refrigerating or freezing the balls.

For the pumpkin cake, I use this recipe:

  • Pumpkin Cake

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package spice cake mix
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/4 cup pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 eggs

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan, or two 9 inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the spice cake mix, sugar, vegetable oil, pumpkin, water and eggs. Beat until well blended. Transfer to the baking dish or cake pans.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven 40 minutes.

I hope you try this sometime! They really are a huge hit at parties! :)

A Dog Owner's Fashion Sense

One thing I've learned from owning Gibson, is having a dog makes you a lot more practical. At least when it comes to fashion. It's been quite a while since I've splurged on a new cute 'going out' outfit and I've definitely cut back on every day casual wear.. But one thing that really gets me excited, is anything that makes dog walking more comfortable.

I don't know what I'd do without the rain gear my mom got me last spring. Or my FitFlops. Oh man, how I'd die in the summer w/o my FitFlops! And of course, living in Northern Illinois, I've needed to invest in some serious cold weather gear. I bought an awesome long down puffy coat last year, but I was still lacking in the glove and boot department. My Uggs were warm, but not so much water proof... and my mittens were neither (and had holes in them..yikes).

So, this year, I decided to complete my warm weather trio and buy myself some waterproof gloves and boots... and I got them both AND my coat last year on EBay. Here are my finds:

Gibson did not understand why I was not taking a photo of him :)

Aren't the boots super cute? Apparently they are some good brand, but all I care about is that they are cute and warm and waterproof :)

The gloves are from LLBean and have thinsulate, so they should work better than the knit mittens w/holes. And the coat is just super warm. I've already worn it this year when it was cold and rainy.

So, that's it. I am kind of excited for it to snow so I can really try everything out!

Gibson still doesn't understand what I was taking photos of though...

Paw Lickin' Bad

Gibson has picked up a new bad habit: Paw Licking

I'm not sure, but it seems like he does it when he's bored. Like, every morning when he's waiting for me to wake up. I hear, "slurp, slurp, slurp, slurp, slurp". At first, it was just annoying, but now it's become a problem..

This only started this week, and he only does it to his right paw (I think it's the right..), and the paw is noticeably more red because of it. It looks painful, and stresses me out.. I've read that grain allergies can cause this, but I just switched him to grain free food! So, it couldn't be that, right? My seasonal allergies have flared up in the past week, so maybe his have too? Or it could just be a boredom thing...

Owning a dog can be so hard sometimes :(

Eye Candy Thursday

This blog post a day thing is hard! Nothing to say today, so here's a cool picture of Gibson I took:

And here's Gibson playing w/his new buddy Rigby when we were puppy sitting :) (he got a little possessive of his "foxy")

Sneeze War

My dog is a goof. Have I mentioned this?

One of the weirdest things he does is sneeze. And no, sneezing isn't exactly a weird behavior, but it is the way that Gibson does it. I blogged about this a lonnnng time ago, saying it was a weird quirk of his. Sure, he sneezes when he needs to sneeze (something gets up his nose, allergies, etc.), but he also sneezes when he a. is frustrated and b. wants attention. You could catch him doing it a few times in the Gibson Talking video if you wanted to see him in action. If he wants something really bad... say, a treat.. and I'm making him do tricks in order to get it, he sneezes. Whenever he whines about something, he also sneezes. It's weird. I asked my vet about it, and apparently lots of dogs do it..which is also weird.. haha

Which brings me to today...

So, every morning after I get ready I go down and make myself a latte to take to work (powdered, I'm not that fancy). During this time, Gibson gets really antsy for me to get his kong filled w/frozen banana out of the freezer. This morning, he was being a real jerk about it and grumbling and growling at me to get it. So, I decided to be a jerk back to him and repeat all the sounds he was making. He'd grumble, I'd grumble. He'd growl, I'd growl. He'd woof, I'd woof. Then, he sneezed. So, I sneezed. So, he sneezed again... and I sneezed again... and so on for about 6 times in a row until I couldn't take it anymore w/o laughing! It was the most hilarious thing and just proves that he can make himself sneeze on command.

What a weirdo :)

Operation Slim Down Gibson

Operation Slim Down Gibson has been in effect for about 3 weeks now, and I am really seeing results! He has a clearly defined waist now, but still looks like a healthy corgi :)

Losing weight!

Starting Weight: 27.3
Goal Weight (what vet wants him to weigh): 25
Current Weight: Not sure, but my scale said 27 last weekend

Here are the changes that I've made to his diet & exercise:

Old food:
Wellness Super5Mix Lamb & Salmon
Protein (min.) 22.0%, Fat (min.) 12.0%, Fiber (max.) 3.0%
First 5 ingredients: Lamb, Menhaden Fish Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice
Amount per day: 1.25 cups + lots of treats

New Food:
Wellness Core Reduced Fat
Protein (min.) 33.0%, Fat (min.) 9.0%, Fat (max.) 10%, Fiber (max.) 8.5%
First 5 Ingredients: Deboned Turkey, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Dried Ground Potatoes
Amount per day: 0.9 cups +minimal treats

Previous Routine:
4 walks a day
1.75 mi total
.5 hr of fetch/chase in the house
(more exercise on weekends)

New Routine
3 walks a day (speed walking)
1 run a day
2+ mi total
.5 hr of fetch/chase in the house
(more exercise on weekends)

So, there's Gibson's weight loss plan (uh, and my own haha). Not that drastic of a change, but it is working! And yeah, we are running now! Every night after dinner. It is nice. I used to be a runner in highschool, but just stopped after that. Tried again when I was getting in shape for our wedding, but it was just so boring on a treadmill. Running w/Gibson keeps it interesting, and kills two birds w/1 stone (he gets excercise, I get excercise, yay!). I hope to keep up w/it for both of our sakes :)

Gibson the Guard Dog

I think I'm going to take advantage of this NaBloPoMo thing, and use it to post some videos that I've never had time to blog about :)

Here's a never before seen (unless you check my youtube channel regularly or are my friend on facebook) video of Gibson doing his guard dog duties. I love his crazy nub wagging :)

It's a very serious job, ya know!

Jail Break

Have you ever seen this video?

Well, that was Gibson yesterday... Only it was a lot less cute and way more scary.

I got home from work yesterday and me and Ben were planning on going out for dinner, but thought we'd walk Gibson first. Our lawn is only partially fenced in, so Gibson and I have this routine, where I will walk out first, access the situation (look to see if any animals or people are in front that might 'distract' him), and then let him out to pee before I put his leash on. Well, we do this, but this time I was distracted by my husband.. instead of looking in front we were talking..

It all happened in slow motion then. I turned around and saw a bunny. Looked over my shoulder and saw Gibson peeing, not noticing it. Stupidly, I said, "craaaap, (in super deep slow motion talk) therrrrre's a buuuuunnnny." Gibson eyes light up. I reached down to grab him, but it was too late. Across the street, through 3 neighbors yards he went. At one point, I had no idea where he was and all I can think was, "he got hit by a car". I kept calling and calling, and finally he saw Ben and came out as happy as can be to tell him about his awesome adventure chasing bunnies.

I put his stupid leash on him and we went for a walk. His head was so high and his butt was wiggling so hard. He was on top of the world, and my heart was beating out of my chest..

I don't know what to do, besides be extra cautious and put his leash on while we're still inside.. Luckily we live on a very quiet street, but still. He's been so good, but stupid bunnies and squirrels and kitties are just so tempting :( *Sigh* Can't wait til we can fence in our yard all the way :(

In lighter news...

Have you guys heard about the costume contest at The Daily Corgi?? Well, voting is on now and Gibson is a finalist! :) There are lots of cute corgis in costumes to look at and some great prizes at stake (I even donated a bumper sticker). So, if you can take the time to vote for your favorite, that would be awesome! VOTE HERE

Oh and speaking of bumper stickers... My Corgi Butt Shop's sale has been extended through Monday at midnight!! So hurry on over there (or here or here) if you'd like to get 20% off this weekend :)

Now, back to being grumpy about 'Jerkson'... :(

I guess I'm doin this thang!

So, I decided I would try out this NaBloPoMo thing. Posting 30 posts in 30 days. I've made it to day 5, so I guess I'll make it official...

If you see a lot of random, not so interesting, posts from me this month, this is why :) I think I should be able to make it.. I always have photos of Gibson as a backup when I have nothing to say!!

Q & A from the Blogiversary.. Your questions answered!

What are your nicknames for Gibson?
There are millions. MILLIONS I tell you! :) I will list what I can think of..
Gibby, Gibbers, Fatty, Fats, Fatty Magoo, Fatty McFatterson, Stinky, Stinks, Stinker McStinkerson, McStinks, Stink Head, Stink Butt, Fluff Head, Funny, Silly, Silly Butt, Bubs, Bud, Buddy, Bubby, Bubbers, Buppy (A cross between bubby & puppy), Jerk Face, Jerkson (coined by my sister), and many other derogatory names :)

What is Gibson's favorite food?
Well, for a meal Wellness Core is is FAVE food he's had.
For treats... CHEESE! and PEANUTBUTTER! and every once in a blue moon he'll get a little crumb of BACON! and he'll get this goofy look on his face:

What is Gibson's one claim to fame?
This blog? :)

My fav thing about your blog was the calendar contest. Will you be doing it next year?
Definitely!! Start taking photos everyone :)

Now I have a question for everyone about this... Did you like the way I handled it? Would you change anything about the process?

When can you tell you've over-kneaded bread?
In my experience, it's hard to over-knead bread by hand. It takes about 10 minutes if you do it right. If it starts to feel sticky, that means that it isn't ready yet and to add more flour. When I first learned how to make bread, my bread was always sticky after I added all the flour that the recipe called for, so I wondered what I was doing wrong. My cooking teacher told me that it is ok to add more flour until the dough is firm, but elastic. Also, you can tell that it is done, by rolling it out.. if it shrinks right away you should knead it longer. When I roll out my dough to make a loaf, I make sure that it stays the shape that I want it to be (with maybe a tiny bit of shrinkage). Hope that helps :)

On the subject of bread, here's my second favorite recipe (it's actually my favorite when it comes to taste, but because it's so good I eat almost an entire loaf the first day I bake it.. So, it doesn't go as far as the whole wheat bread):

Buttermilk Bread
6 to 6-1/2 cups all-purpose flour (also works great w/ half white & half wheat flour)
3 tablespoons sugar
2 envelopes FLEISCHMANN'S RapidRise Yeast
2-1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk (or substitute a cup of regular milk w/1 tablespoon of vinegar mixed in)
1 cup water
1/3 cup butter or margarine, cut into pieces
(I sometimes also sprinkle in some garlic & oregano to make a yummy italian bread)

In large bowl, combine 3 cups flour, sugar, undissolved yeast, salt, and baking soda. Heat buttermilk, water, and butter until very warm (120° to 130°F); butter does not need to melt. (Mixture will appear curdled.) Stir into flour mixture. Stir in enough remaining flour to make soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Cover; let rest on floured surface 10 minutes.

Divide dough in half. Roll each half to 12 x 7-inch rectangle. Beginning at short end of each, roll up tightly as for jelly roll. Pinch seams and ends to seal. Place, seam sides down, in 2 greased 8-1/2 x 4-1/2-inch loaf pans. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes.

Bake at 375°F for 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Remove from pans; let cool on wire racks.

Gibson Talking

I've been trying for months and months to capture Gibson "talking" on film. Of course he usually stops as soon as I hit record on my flip camera...but not this time!! He must have reallllllllly wanted the paper towel I was holding!

He has been so chit-chatty lately (and loud!). Man, he does not shut up!! Bark, bark, bark. Whine, whine, whine. Grumble, grumble, grumble. It never ends! :)

Do your dogs "talk" a lot? I feel like it's definitely a corgi thing!! I mean, who can forget this awesome video:

Happy November :)

My Angel Puppy

I ♥ my little guy

He was so worn out today after barking at over a hundred trick or treaters last night and struggling to take his custom off :)

Him and Pink Baby had a costume fashion show too...

PB's shipping off tomorrow to California to visit Meg. Our time together just flew by!
